Free WI-FI can be a hotspot for hackers!

We all love to surf the net when we are out and about and how better to do it than when you see that ever increasingly popular sign “FREE WIFI”. As we move towards doing more and more on the net, such as banking, work related tasks and other personal things, we are becoming ever more comfortable in doing so, but forget the growing risks.

It is very easy to sign into FREE WIFE – your device picks it up and you simply enter the passcode, if in fact it requires one, as many public hotspots are now open access. Then most of us don’t give it a second thought before going about our normal tasks once we are connected, and this is what is leaving us wide open to cyber security attacks.

These hotspots are literally a hackers dream. They allow them to easily access your information if the right steps haven’t been taken to protect it. If it is work related, you could unknowingly give them access to your companies systems and data – and at worst, unwittingly be the source of a ransomware attack. If it’s your online banking, you could actually be giving them easy access to your cash!

So, what’s the solution?

• Use a VPN and encrypt what you send
• Don’t do anything work related or enter personal information
• Change your settings so your device doesn’t automatically connect to WIFI

And if you’re a business owner, you need to make sure your employees are educated in the risks of WIFI hotspots – not just the IT guys either – everyone from the junior to the senior executive needs to have a good sense of what they can be putting at risk and how to avoid it, when using free Wi-Fi.

An education programme should be part of your employees training and CPD and if you’re not confident in doing it yourself, turn to someone who can and get in the professionals!
